E-mail Categorization

eXpurgate technology doesn’t only identify spam, but also reliably categorizes each incoming e-mail. This approach enables a differentiation between legitimate individual messages (clean) from mass mailings and desired bulk e-mails such as newsletters (bulk) from undesired (spam). eXpurgate currently offers 16 different categories (depending on the type of specifications for the solution used). The customer can determine what is done with affected e-mails for each individual category.

eXpurgate currently offers the following e-mail categories:

  • clean:
    E-mails that do not contain any suspicious characteristics, e.g. individual e-mail messages sent by a sender to one or a few recipients.

  • bulk:
    Legitimate, usually desired bulk e-mails, e.g. newsletters requested or ordered by the recipient or whose receipt the recipient otherwise explicitly approved.

  • spam:
    Unambiguously identified spam or phishing e-mails.

  • bulk.advertising:
    Advertising e-mails that are not typical spam, but are generally undesired.

  • bulk.porn:
    E-mails with pornographic contents, which are not spam (e.g. pornographic newsletters).

  • dangerous:
    E-mails that contain potentially dangerous executable code or corresponding attachments.

  • dangerous.attachment:
    E-mails that contain executable attachments.

  • dangerous.code:
    E-mails with potentially dangerous contents.

  • dangerous.iframe:
    E-mails that use the iframe feature.

  • clean.empty:
    E-mails that neither contain characters in the subject line nor in the body.

  • clean.empty-body:
    E-mails with a completely empty body.

  • clean.almost-empty:
    E-mails with a very short body.

  • clean.bounce:
    E-mails returned to the sender due to a delivery error.

eXpurgate virus protection offers the following additional categories:

  • dangerous.virus:
    E-mails that contain a virus, worm, or Trojan.

  • dangerous.virus outbreak:
    E-mails that are very likely to contain a new virus not yet detected by virus scanners due to its novelty.
